Supporting
Our Staff: David’s Story
“Creating a culture were asking for support is seen as a strength, not a weakness.”
Meet David
An operational team manager within the Trust, found himself facing a sudden shift in his personal circumstances. Following a relationship breakdown, he became the primary co-parent for his two young children while managing a high-responsibility role with on-call duties.
The sudden increase in home responsibilities, combined with the emotional strain of the changes, began to impact the colleagues mental health and sleep. Hesitant to speak up due to a common misconception that male leaders should “just tough it out,”
He needed a confidential, proactive space to adjust his working life while staying fully engaged in his career.
The support
Recognising that David seemed stretched during a routine check-in, his line manager reached out with empathy to start a supportive conversation:
Health and Wellbeing Passport: Together, David and his manager completed a Health and Wellbeing Passport. This allowed David to formally record his current parental obligations and personal circumstances, ensuring a shared understanding without needing to repeatedly explain his situation.
Flexible Working & Leave Adjustments: Utilising Your Flex Plus and Your Leave Plus, the team agreed on an adjusted shift pattern that allowed our colleague to handle school drop-offs and pickups. Temporary adjustments to his on-call rotation were also arranged to provide predictability at home.
Targeted Wellbeing & Mental Health Support: Through Your Health and Wellbeing Plus, our colleague was signposted to confidential 1-to-1 mental health support and counselling services. He also participated in a Health & Wellbeing MOT to focus on sleep hygiene and stress management.
Occupational Health Consultation: The Occupational Health Department provided an independent assessment to offer practical recommendations for maintaining a healthy work-life boundary during a period of significant personal transition.
The outcome
Through the practical application of Your Health and Wellbeing Plus initiatives and flexible working schemes, David successfully navigated a difficult life transition without compromising his health or career trajectory.
In their words
“The 121 Wellbeing Support I received was exceptional; at time I needed someone neutral to just listen to me venting out and he provided that. This led me to feel less stressed and anxious. I am in a good space now, thanks to the team”
Why it matters
