Growing
confidence, finding purpose and building a better future

Meet Alex

Mental health difficulties and problems with drugs or alcohol can sometimes become closely linked, making it harder to know where to turn or what kind of support might help.

Our Dual Diagnosis Service works with people experiencing both, helping them understand what is happening, identify what support they need and connect with the right services.

For Alex, that meant being referred on to Renew, where he was able to continue his recovery with specialist support.

When Alex was first referred life felt overwhelming. They were struggling to cope with everyday challenges, experiencing thoughts of suicide, and finding it difficult to see a positive future. Their confidence was low, hope felt distant, and both their mental and physical wellbeing had been affected.

The support

Finding hope through support

Looking back, Alex believes the support they received through Renew played a vital role in their recovery journey.

“My confidence has grown significantly, I feel much more positive, and both my mental and physical health have improved. Before coming to Renew, I was really struggling to cope and often had thoughts of suicide. Looking back, I honestly don’t know where I’d be without the support I’ve received. Renew has given me hope, helped me believe in myself again, and played a huge part in my recovery.”

Through regular support, encouragement and access to a range of opportunities, Alex was able to begin rebuilding confidence and focusing on their wellbeing.

Discovering purpose through gardening

A key part of Alex’s recovery has been becoming involved in Renew’s gardening groups.

Through gardening, they have learnt new skills, established a routine, built friendships and developed a renewed sense of purpose. Alongside other group members, Alex helps care for the raised beds at Renew, growing a variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs including strawberries, red currants, courgettes, green beans, pumpkins, carrots, parsley and thyme.

For Alex, the garden has become much more than a place to grow produce.

“Since joining the gardening groups at Renew, I have made new friends and developed a real sense of purpose.”

The outcome

Being actively involved in the gardening groups has provided structure, motivation and a sense of achievement.

“I look forward to getting out of bed each morning, spending time with my friends, and working in the garden. It has become an important part of my routine and has had a hugely positive impact on my wellbeing, helping me stay focused on my recovery and build a better future for myself.”

The support, encouragement and belief shown by the Renew team helped Alex work towards goals that once felt out of reach.

In their words

Reflecting on their journey, Alex wanted to share a message with the staff who supported them:

“I would like to say a big, massive thank you to Renew for helping me reach my goals. I couldn’t have done it without your support, encouragement and belief in me. Thank you for everything.”

Today, Alex continues to build on the progress they have made, using the skills, confidence and support gained through Renew to maintain their recovery and look positively towards the future.
