Getting Mental Health Support for Children and Young People

Need urgent help?

If a child or young person needs urgent mental health support, contact NHS 111.

If there is an immediate risk to life, call 999 or go to the nearest Emergency Department.

Where to start with mental health support

Children and young people can experience a wide range of emotional and mental health difficulties, from worries, low mood and problems at school to more serious or complex needs.

Support is available for things such as anxiety, low mood, emotional wellbeing, difficulties at school, family or social pressures, learning disabilities, eating difficulties, early signs of psychosis, long-term physical health conditions and times of crisis.

Help may come from early help, school and community teams, health and social care professionals, voluntary organisations or specialist children and young people’s mental health services.

You do not need to know which service is the right one before asking for help. The important first step is getting in touch so that you can be directed to the support that best meets the child or young person’s needs.

Start with advice and early support

Sometimes a young person may need advice, practical strategies or support to help them manage how they are feeling before things become more difficult.

Support may be available through schools, colleges, wellbeing services and community-based teams. This can include help with anxiety, low mood, confidence, relationships and other pressures that affect emotional wellbeing.

Finding the right service

If you are worried about a child or young person’s emotional or mental health and think they may need more support, Humber’s Contact Point team can help identify the right next step.

Contact Point is the main route into children and young people’s mental health services across Hull and the East Riding, including Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and other specialist support. The team can consider what the young person is experiencing and help direct them to the most appropriate service.

Contact Point: 01482 303688
Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

More specialist support

Some children and young people may need more specialist or longer-term support. This can include help for significant mental health difficulties, eating disorders, long-term health conditions or situations where there is increased risk.

Humber provides a range of specialist children and young people’s mental health services, and Contact Point can help make sure referrals reach the right team.
