Building confidence, connections and wellbeing
Living with dementia can affect memory, confidence and everyday life, but staying mentally active and connected with others can make a real difference.
Our Older People’s Mental Health Team runs an eight-week Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) programme for people living with mild to moderate dementia. The programme uses structured, evidence-based activities to support thinking skills, confidence and quality of life.
Sessions take place on Thursday mornings at the Coltman Street Memory Assessment Service, offering a friendly and welcoming space where people can take part in enjoyable group activities, share experiences and connect with others
How it works
Supporting cognitive health and social connection
Each week focuses on a different theme, encouraging participants to explore memories, thoughts and experiences in a supportive setting. Themes include:
Orientation Week
Craft Week
Current Affairs Week
Childhood Week
These activities are designed to stimulate different areas of cognition while promoting confidence, communication and social engagement.
Supporting families and carers
The programme also provides an opportunity for carers to connect with one another and access peer support.
By bringing people together, CST helps reduce feelings of isolation while creating opportunities to share experiences, advice and encouragement.
The difference it’s making
Positive experiences and outcomes
Participants who have attended the programme have described the sessions as enjoyable, informative and supportive.
Many people who complete CST go on to access additional support from community organisations, including the Alzheimer’s Society, Butterflies and Carers Support groups, helping them remain connected and supported beyond the programme itself.
Improving wellbeing through meaningful activity
CST provides a supportive and stimulating environment that helps people living with dementia maintain cognitive function, build social connections and enhance their overall wellbeing.
Through meaningful activities, shared experiences and ongoing support, the programme helps participants remain engaged, confident and connected within their communities.
